What is the meaning of Christmas? That’s a loaded question. Of course, some people consider Christmas and the holiday season to be a deeply spiritual and religious time but others may not share those beliefs. However, the truth about the holiday season does not really have anything to do with your creed or culture. The following quotes are from books, songs, authors, TV personalities and even world leaders because, regardless of religious views, we can all agree on 3 things about the season.

1.       Christmas is in our hearts

Christmas cannot be purchased, and is not a commodity. It is in our hearts and in the way we treat others. While we tend to wait for the holiday season to choose kindness, or to consider donations and charity, the truth is that that sort of giving spirit should live in our hearts all year long. If you wish, Christmas can be every single day.

·         "I will honour Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year." –A Christmas Carol

·         “He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree.”
― Roy L. Smith

·         “Just remember, the true spirit of Christmas lies in your heart.” — The Polar Express

·         "Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!" – Dr. Seuss

·         “To the American People: Christmas is not a time or a season but a state of mind. To cherish peace and good will, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” ― Calvin Coolidge

·         “Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmastime.”
― Laura Ingalls Wilder

·         “I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!”
― Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

2.       Christmas is about the people you love

Christmas would lose its joy without your friends and family close. Though the holiday has become highly commercialized and the overall culture sometimes misses the point, Christmas gifts are not important and where you spend the holiday doesn’t matter – as long as you have your tribe with you, right?

·         “Christmas Eve will find me, where the lovelight gleams. I’ll be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams.” – I’ll be Home for Christmas

·         “There’ll be parties for hosting, marshmallows for toasting and caroling out in the snow.”
– It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

·         “Were I a philosopher, I should write a philosophy of toys, showing that nothing else in life need to be taken seriously, and that Christmas Day in the company of children is one of the few occasions on which men become entirely alive.” ― Robert Lynd

3.       Christmas is best when you enjoy the simple things

Christmas reminds us of the simplicity of childhood. Snowy days, gorgeous lights, delicious treats, and fantastic music are all as wonderful and pleasurable as they are inexpensive. The best things in life – and during the holidays – are free.

·         “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, toys in ev’ry store. But the prettiest sight to see, is the holly that will be on your own front door.” – It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

·         “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.” – Elf

·         A lovely thing about Christmas is that it’s compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together. - Garrison Keillor

·         “One of the most glorious messes in the world is the mess created in the living room on Christmas day. Don't clean it up too quickly."  ― Andy Rooney

·         Fine old Christmas, with the snowy hair and ruddy face, had done his duty that year in the noblest fashion, and had set off his rich gifts of warmth and color with all the heightening contrast of frost and snow. - George Eliot

These fantastic quotes all illustrate the meaning of the season perfectly, but everyone’s Christmas memories and traditions are different. It is not so much about what you do but about the spirit in which it is done. This holiday season enjoy your friends and family and let your heart be filled with joy from even the simplest things. If you do, you may just find that this is the best Christmas of your life.
