One of the only things that I love as much as writing is music, electronic music specifically. If you're anything like me then you're constantly looking for new music and artists to listen to. I've decided to compile a list of ten of my favorite lesser known electronic artists that I think everyone should go check out if they haven't already. I'm including my top three favorite songs from each artist as well. Enjoy!

1. SoDown

One of my favorite up and coming electronic artists right now is SoDown. Part of the reason that I like him so much is because his music has a lot of variety to it. Some songs are more funky, some more dubby, some more chill, and some more heavy bass. It's really difficult for me to narrow it down to just three song recommendations because I honestly haven't listened to a song of his that I didn't like yet, but I would have to say that my current three favorites of his are Baby Don't Let Me Down, With You, and Eskimo. SoDown has worked with artists like Manic Focus and Liquid Stranger, and he is currently on his very first tour as a headlining artist, so be sure to go check him out!

2. PLÜM

Ranking in at number two is PLÜM, one of the most unique electronic artists that I've come across lately. His style is chill and melodic, sort of similar to artists such as Odesza, Big Wild, and Petit Biscuit. What sets him apart from those artists though is all of the unique sampling that he includes in a lot of his songs. The first song that I ever discovered by him which made me fall in love with him and which is still my favorite song of his is called True Love. My other two favorites right now would probably have to be Where and Soul Food, although he did just release a brand new track on March 15th called Downtown to LA that is really great too.

3. MeSo

Next on this list is MeSo, an experimental bass artist based out of Chicago. If you like wobbly, heavy, housey bass, then you've got to check this guy out. The only artists I can even begin to compare him to are Jauz and Ganja White Night, but his sound is unique and specific to himself. My current three favorite songs of his are Spicy Mayo, Mango Pod, and Push It.

4. PEEKABOO

This next artists is coming up pretty fast in the EDM scene. He just released his second track with Bassnectar, which in this scene means that he's about to blow up. PEEKABOO produces music that hypes you up. It's trappy, it's heavy, it's dubby, and it's full of bass. My three favorite songs of his right now are Whistleblower, Babatunde – VIP, and Swingin.

5. Marvel Years

Marvel Years has been around for a few years now, but he's still one of the smaller artists on most lineups which I personally think is crazy because of how talented he is. His music is funky and chill and sultry, a similar style to artists like Manic Focus, Sunsquabi, and Late Night Radio. My favorite way to listen to Marvel Years is turned way up in my car with the windows down and the cruise control on, but his music sounds good no matter how you listen to it. My current three favorite songs of his are Anywhere You Want to Go, Hit Them With It, and Daydream which is off the new EP he just released on March 15th, Hidden Groove, Vol. II.

6. CharlesTheFirst

CharlesTheFirst is another artist who is beginning to grow pretty big in the EDM scene. His style of music is more chill, but he does have some songs that still hit pretty hard. My top three favorite songs of his are Mercy Falls (his most popular song and for good reason), Step/Time, and The Ascent.

7. Moods

I first discovered Moods on the Spotify playlist that Pretty Lights created called The Hot Sh*t (also where I discovered both PLÜM and Motifv—thanks Derek!). The music that Moods makes is happy, dreamy, and melodic. It's the type of music that makes even cold, dark winter days feel like summertime. My favorite song of his, which is also the song that first made me fall in love with him, is Love Is Real. My other two favorites right now are Zoom Out and his newest song, Where I Met You.

8. Shlump

Coming in at number eight is Shlump. He describes his music as "alien bass musik", and I'd say that's a pretty accurate description. In fact, it's so accurate that I really don't have much else to add to it besides that you should definitely check him out if you're into alien sounding bass music. My three favorite songs of his are Bounce, Like A Drug, and Maniac.

9. Motifv

Motifv is another more chill electronic artist. His music is more on the funky, melodic side. He just released his very first album titled The Path on March 20th, and the whole thing is great. My three favorite songs off of it would have to be Must Be Love, Grey Skies Warm Breeze, and Rippled Sidewalk.

10. Mystic Grizzly

Last but not least, Mystic Grizzly makes music that makes you feel like you're being transported to another dimension. It's trancey, yet dubby, making it very easy to zone out and get lost in. It's the type of music that aliens probably listen to. My current top three songs from this artist are Language of the Leech, Starry Night, and Infinite Gratitude.

  • I'm going to check out Mystic Grizzly, Motifv, and Shlump. Heard of PEEKABOO. Think I've heard a song or so, but I'll check him out again. MeSo sounds like a dope artist too. I'm just not getting into EDM, so thatnks for the recommendations. I think Dawn Richard is another one that you might want to check out.

Ooh I've never heard of that one, but I will definitely check it out! Thanks :)

I'm the same but with other genres. Never really got into electronic music, but don't know much about it either. I'm going to give some of these artists a listen. Thanks for the recommendations Alexis!

Hopefully you find some that you like! 🙂

I will check some of these out! I wouldn't be surprised, but have you heard of the Gorillaz? I discovered them last year and find their music and story line combination pretty genius.

I've heard of them, but never really listened to much of their music before. I will definitely check them out though! :)

Great article. I'm looking for new music/exploring genres that are unfamiliar to me, so this article is a great reference for me.

This is a great list! My personal favorite is Nightmares on Wax. I love listening to electronic music and instrumentals when I paint. I love where the music takes me but also where I take the music. I think listening to music that has no words or very few words really helps expand the mind.
