TREADING WATER

I'm treading water,

me, a mass of skin and bones,

struggling to float,

amid the swirling waves.

I keep wondering how I got here,

though I should be figuring out how to get to shore.

It looks so far away,

the sandy coast and dunes

appearing nearly flat.

The death black jettymight be closer,

it's jagged edges welcoming

only due to its solidity.

How my limbs are aching,

my back and neck feeling as though

the tissues inside have congealed.

How did I get here?

All alone,

treading water...
