When I wrote my book, "The Sisters Of Dragoness: Quagmire's Revenge," I wanted to build strong female characters. That does not mean they are not compassionate, emotional people. They just handle things differently, and in the world of fantasy, that includes magic. Where there is magic, there is also chaos, and working together, the women can handle almost anything. Of course, being part human, they do have vulnerabilities that could hinder their progress, but for the most part, they get along. They also do not shun help from the men of the kingdom, but would rather work alongside them. As the case with Ornatia who is the captain of the guards at the castle. Here is an excerpt from the book: One of the warriors took off her helmet, and Stark said in surprise, "You're a woman!" Serena and the other women of dragoness smirked, and Serena replied, "Stark, don't tell me you're a chauvinist?" The young female warrior walked over to Stark as she blew the hair off her face, "And what is your problem with women, sir?" Stark felt all eyes on him and spied Herald looking amused in the corner. He pleaded with him with his eyes, 'Help Me!' Herald came forward, "My lady," he bowed, "I think what the gentleman meant was he has never seen such a capable female warrior before, as shown by the many medals on your armor." Stark smiled gratefully, "Yes my lady, I was astounded by your apparent, admirable achievements." The fair-haired woman was quick, Stark didn't have a chance to react as he found himself knocked on his back with the young woman's foot on his chest and her sword at his throat. Phinnia giggled out loud and Kerina snorted as the young woman said, "Just an example of my, 'admirable achievements,' as you stated. Then she placed her sword back in the sheath of her tabard and put her hand out to help Stark up. Herald started laughing, and Stark followed along, as did the rest of the large group. So you see, they can all get along, but mutual respect is desired of course, (giggle)! I think what makes a well-rounded female character is someone who has strong emotions but doesn't get carried away with them. When we can control our emotions, whether it be ourselves or a character in our book, the person/s are perceived as capable, but also warmhearted. It is what we do with our thoughts and emotions that enable us to handle even the toughest situations whether we are fighting a dragon, or just received some bad news about a loved one. Life is tough, and after losing someone dear this past Summer, I could have chosen to fall apart every day and weep, or take a deep breathe and honor his memory, which I did by vowing to finish my novel and dedicating it to him. All I can do is trudge on and be the best, human and woman, my heart leads me to be. We are all warriors fighting battles, and no two are the same, be kind to each other.
